A workshop on the TAO near-infrared instrument. |

On September 11, 2009, we have held a workshop on the near-infrared instrument (tentatively named TAO-NIRCAM) to be mounted on the TAO 6.5-m telescope.
There were many requests/requirements for specification of the instrument proposed and discussed.

A workshop on the mid-infrared instrument for TAO 6.5m telescope (TAOMIR) was held
on July 24, 2009. Sufficient exchanges of opinions about the specifications, the
performances, and the scientific cases of the TAOMIR were conducted. We continue to
develop the TAOMIR in order to be a widely used instrument for many astronomers.

The TAO group at Institute of Astronomy has started scientific observation in the near infrared wavelength at a 1m infrared telescope on the summit of Mt. Chajnantor in northern Chile, called the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) project. The altitude of the observatory is 5640m, which makes it the world's highest telescope.

Congratulation on the first light |

March 22, 2009, we succeeded the first light observation of the 1-m miniTAO telescope of the University of Tokyo, built at the summit of Mt. Chajnantor, by using an optical CCD camera for engineering. Congratulatory message has been received from people around the world.

The 1-m telescope construction has been completed at the summit of Co. Chajnantor |

On March 15, 2009, the 1.0-m University of Tokyo Atacama Telescope was assembled at the summit of Co. Chajnantor, and a test observation instrument with a CCD camera was also installed. In preparation for the first light, we are developing peripheral instruments and adjusting the telescope and the observation instrument. The picture shows the assembled telescope in the dome.

The University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory 1m telescope is now under construction at the summit of Mt. Chajnantor. On March 9, the rotating dome structure was craned and installed onto the lower structure of the enclosure. Then on March 11, the 1m telescope was transported upto the summit, and was installed into the dome on March 14.

On 27 February 2009, the dome structure has been carried to the summit of Chajnantor, which is the site of the University of Tokyo Atacama 1.0-m telescope, in divided into two half parts of the dome roof, a dome shutter, and a base structure after a trial fitting at Calama, about three and a half hour's drive apart from the Chajnantor site.

The trial construction of the miniTAO 1-m telescope has been completed on 20 Feb. 2009 in Calama, Chile, which is located three hours away from Cerro Chajnantor, the site for construction. Wiring between the telescope and the instruments and the start-up of the telescope operation system are in progress.

The 1-m miniTAO telescope and its dome arrived in Calama city, at a distance of about three and a half hours away by car from the planned construction site of Mt. Chajnantor. Once dismantled after making the temporary assembly in Calama, the telescope and the dome will be transported to the summit of M. Chajnantor, and then they will be reassembled at the summit.

Foundation construction of a telescope and a dome building are being progressed at the summit of Chajnantor which is the site for the University of Tokyo Atacama 1.0-m telescope. Excavating and flattening works for the dome building have been completed.
