The news of TAO becomes active in Chile !

We perform publicity work of TAO project in Chile. This work to introduce a summary or development of TAO project was continued from early phase of the project. As a results, recognition of TAO gradually is increasing in Chile. We introduce the article of the newspaper of Chile.

2006 : Start of Amity with San Pedro de Atacama

In 2006, the access road to Co. Chajnantor mountaintop was completed and performed the ceremony for the completion with citizens of city of San Pedro de Atacama on the mountaintop. After the ceremony for the completion, we exchanged a document to promise the long friendship with the San Pedro de Atacama city with TAO. The year of 2006 was memorial year when the frendship with TAO and city of San Pedro de Atacama deepened.

EL MERCURIO

We repeated the discussions with city of San Pedro de Atacama for many years. Afterwards we got understanding, agreement about a purpose and the contents of TAO project and finally managed to reach the construction of the access road to top of Co. Chajnantor in 2006. Following the fact that TAO was accepted as a member of new community, a message with pictures was published in a newspaper in Chile. In the article, we celebrated memory of the 26th anniversary of the municipal organization of city of San Pedro de Atacama together and we expressed the friendship with TAO and San Pedro de Atacama.

2010 : Ceremony of completion of miniTAO telescope at Santiago, Chile

The miniTAO telescope completion memorial ceremony was held at Santiago, capital city of Chile, on July, 2010.In addition, a commemorative stamp was published from the postal administration station in Chile. Furthermore, there was the news that that Chilean Science and Technology Agency (CONICYT) decided around mountaintop where miniTAO telescope was built on a scientific site as Atacama astronomy park for the next 50 years. There are many events that recognition of TAO was sublimed into in the summer in Chile of 2010.

The news that miniTAO telescope was constructed on the top of Co. Chajnantor in the Atacama astronomical park was released on 29 June 2010. Many news were introduced on the paper, e.g., the reason why Chile, far from Japan, was selected as a place of telescope site, telescope having been built in cooperation with local workers, being going to build the TAO 6.5m telescope, and the image of the first light of miniTAO telescope be introduced on ceremony of July 7.

In addition, the photograph of the dome of the miniTAO telescope, the cover shot of Atacama astronomy park was placed, too. Contents will be seen at web site follows.

LA TERCERA, Special Issue of Japan

TAO was introduced on a Chilean newspaper as a symbol of Japanese technique in Chile on September, 2010. The paper reported about outlines of TAO and ceremony of miniTAO telescope. A comment of Chilean Science and Technology Agency (CONICYT) was run in the piece. "Chile and Japan will cooperate more and more in future to resolve a mystery of the universe."

2011 : Start of miniTAO remote control system and Scientific results

There were many results about miniTAO on 2011.The miniTAO was authorized as "The highest astronomical observatory in the world", by Guinness World Records on May.Remote control system for miniTAO started in earnest from fall. MAX38 which is one of the focal plane instrument of miniTAO,observed the asteroid 2005YU55 during closest approach to the earth on November.

EL MERCURIO, Special Issue of Japan

A newspaper, EL MERCURIO, introduced miniTAO as "The highest astronomical observatory in the world" on December 2011. In the article many topics about miniTAO were introduced, such as outline of TAO project, authorization by Guinness World Records, observational results of closest asteroid, and so on.

Furthermore, many pictures were published, e.g., development of miniTAO observatory, a commemorative stamp of friendship between Chile and Japan, field work with researchers and local workers in Chile on the top of Co. Chajnanor. The article is closed by the following contents. "The most advanced observation could not be carried out without the cooperation of Chile government, Chile Science and Technology Agency (CONICYT), Chile University, and local cooperation of city of San Pedro de Atacama."

2012 TAO project on Public place

As the recognition of the TAO plan in Chile is rising, the remarks about TAO at an official place increased; summit conference between president of Chile and prime minister of Japan, meeting between president of Chile and president of The University of Tokyo, and lecture by Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile.

Media reports in Chile

A lot of media in Chile mentioned that President Pinera visited The University of Tokyo and had lecture there on March 28. The remark of lecture was "the TAO project plays a big role in science and education between the two countries and President Pinera praises activity of TAO project".

We will continue publicity work positively in future in Chile so that the introduction and the news about TAO project continue.
