In commemoration of starting astronomical observations at the world's highest site, memorial stamps are issued by the Postal Bureau of Chile on July 7, 2010, and a commemoration ceremony have been held at Santiago on the same day.
This is a special program to mark the friendship between Chile and Japan, and represents a strong expectation by the Chilean government for the TAO project.
There is a notation of "University of Tokyo" on the stamp as well as the national flags of both Chile and Japan, which are really an unlikely design for a memorial stamp in Chile.
The stamps can be purchased at the University of Tokyo Communication Center. Also a brief introduction to the TAO project is presented at the same place, so please visit us there.

The astronomer of the University of Tokyo climbing the Mt. Chajnantor on his foot when there was no road up to the summit back in 2002. As a background photo of the stamp, we express the courage and the obsessiveness of the TAO project group who have been struggling to realize the project.

The first day cover, which is an envelope with a special postmark of the date of the issue. The milky way and the dome taken at the summit (face side), and the astronomical objects taken with the miniTAO telescope (back side) is designed on the envelope.
