History

Institute of Astronomy (IoA), School of Science, the University of Tokyo, was established in 1988 for promoting educational and research activities of observational astronomy when the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory was reorganized into the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. IoA performs astronomical researches using a various telescopes and instruments as well as operates IoA’s own observatories of Kiso Observatory and Atacama Observatory.

Brief History

  • 1888 (M21): Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, The University of Tokyo was established.
  • 1974 (S49): Kiso Observatory was established
  • 1988 (S63): The Tokyo Astronomical Observatory was reorganized and Institute of Astronomy, School of Science, The University of Tokyo was established.
  • 2015 (H27): Atacama Observatory was established.
