Steady progress in development of the near-infrared instrument SWIMS mounted on the TAO 6.5-m telescope.

SWIMS is an near-infrared instrument mounted on the TAO 6.5-m telescope.
We have started the design in 2009, and the development is in progress steadily.

The President of Chile gave high appreciation of TAO in a Japan-Chile summit meeting of APEC and in a meeting with the President of the University of Tokyo. |

Dr. Sebastián Piñera the President of Chile addressed a remark on the TAO project that this project is highly appreciated in Chile, during the Japan-Chile meeting with Prime Minister Kan in APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference) on November 14, 2010. On 23 August, we opened a new exhibition booth of the TAO project at the Communication Center, the University of Tokyo, where we set up a message board. We have been getting a lot of supporting messages from everyone who stopped at the booth, including children, people from foreign countries, and so on. We really appreciate it!

Memorial stamps for the completion of the miniTAO telescope have been issued |

In commemoration of starting astronomical observations at the world's highest site, memorial stamps are issued by the Postal Bureau of Chile on July 7, 2010, and a commemoration ceremony have been held at Santiago on the same day.
This is a special program to mark the friendship between Chile and Japan

The project team of the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO; principthe installation of a prototype 1-m telescope at the same site, and have kicked off its astronomical observations since March 2009. Cerro Chajnantor is 5640 m in elevation, making the telescope at the highest altitude among any ground-based telescopes in the world.
