UTokyo Forum 2013

Utokyo Forum 2013 in Chile was successfully held from November 7 to 8, co-hosted by Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC) and Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile.
TAO project has been working together with Chilean universities and government for more than 10 years. Inauguration ceremony of the miniTAO 1m telescope was held in 2010 with attendance of Japanese ambassador to Chile, the director of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, and the president of CONICYT, and a congratulatory message from President Pinera was delivered there as well. We contributed to conclude academic exchange agreements with PUC and University of Chile, and also made an agreement with department of astronomy at Universidad de Conception. Following these long relationship with Chile, having the UTokyo Forum in Chile is a great pleasure for TAO project to realize that our effort to promote friendship between Chile and Japan is a great success.

During the UTokyo Forum, more than 15 workshops related to astronomy, seismology, tsunami, volcanic eruption, renewable energy, mineral resources, and food supply were held. Over 150 professors and staff from 20 facilities and institutions, including President Junichi Hamada, have attended from University of Tokyo. From Chile, order of 100 persons have participated from PUC, Universidad de Chile, Universidad de Conception, Universidad Andres Bello, Universidad Diego Protales, Universidad de Valparaiso, and Chilan goverment.

An excursion to the TAO observatory at Atacama was carried out before the forum, and a specific mention to TAO project was made during the opening ceremony. Thus, it was a good occasion for us to promote the existence of TAO project in Chile.

This was the first UTokyo Forum in South America, and following the workshops on November 7 and 8 at Santiago, the rest were held successfully at Sao Paolo, Brazil on November 11. Those who attended at Brazil left Santiago satisfied with the success in Chile.

Events and Workshops

Following various workshops and events were held.

The workshops "Technology and Instrumentation in Astronomy" and "Astronomy and Astrophysics from ALMA" are related to TAO project and active discussions were made, with more than 50 participants from Universidad de Chile, PUC, Universidad de Antofagasta, and ALMA Project as well as from Japan.

Excursion to Atacama

On Nobember 5 and 6, before the forum, an excursion tour to TAO observatory at Atacama was carried out, and 53 persons participated. On Nobember 5, a tour to ALMA observatory at an altitude of 5000m was carried out, followed by visit to TAO base facility under construction at the town of San Pedro de Atacama and a interacting event with people of San Pedro de Atacama. On November 6, a tour to the summit of Mt. Chajnantor at an altitude of 5640m where the TAO observatory is located was carried out.

November 5 : ALMA Observatory Tour

The first day of the excursion started with a tour to the ALMA observatory at the base of the Mt. Chajnantor where TAO observatory is located. 53 participants first went through medical health check by a doctor at the base facility of ALMA at an altitude of 2900m, and then went up to the summit facility of ALMA at 5000m. They seemed to have impressed with the radio antennae of ALMA as well as the environment of the Pampa la Bola plateau where they are located. The dome of the miniTAO telescope at the summit of Mt. Chajnantor were also seen when we drive up to the plateau. Although some didn't pass the medial check and some more had to make an emergency descent due to high altitude sickness, all the participants deepened the understanding of the activities of astronomers at Atacama.

November 5 : Interacting Event

We had a interacting event at the city of San Pedro de Atacama on November 5, with more than 70 attendants including the mayor Ms. Sandra Berna and 18 representatives of the city. A dish decorated with a drawing of Akafuji (Mt. Fuji in red) and cherry blossoms were given to the mayor from Prof. Hiroaki Aihara, dean of Graduate School of Science, and we deepened exchanges.

November 6 : Summit Tour to TAO Observatory

A tour to the TAO observatory was carried out on the second day. Although the observatory is locate at the summit of Mt. Chajnantor, whose altitude is 600m higher than that of ALMA, no one suffered from high altitude sickness as inhalation of oxygen is required as a safety rule. The participants seemed to be surprised by the unpaved road up to the summit with a width of only 4m and with occasional falling rocks, and commented that they would support the activities of TAO project working under such harsh environment. The person participated the tour is;

  • Prof. Hiroaki Aihara (Dean of Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo)
  • Prof. Hiroyuki Takeda (Vice-Dean of Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo)
  • Prof. Kenji Satake (Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo)
