IoA Begins Cooperation in Science Education with Adachi Ward, Tokyo

In July 2011, Adachi Ward in Tokyo, and Institute of Astronomy (IoA), the University of Tokyo, made an arrangement on science education to share the results from cutting-edge scientific researches and to promote the high-level science education and the spread of astronomy.

Adachi Ward is preparing for a renewal open in April 2013 of "Galaxy+City" (pronounced as galaxity), a public complex facility in Adachi providing a kid's science museum and two culture halls.
IoA and Adachi Ward, under a cooperation of Science Station, a NPO for science promotion and education in Japan, held a science workshop in September 2011, celebrating the renewal open of Galaxy+City in advance. In this workshop, which aimed at letting everyone know how fun science is, Tomohiko Nakamura, a graduate student at IoA, gave a lecture talk on TAO.

Galaxy+City will have a planetarium, where IoA has a plan to in realtime show night sky images taken at the TAO site atop Cerro Chajnantor, a 5640-m high mountain in the Atacama plateau, Chile. This allows everyone who visits the planetrarium to enjoy a spectacular starry sky which is only seen from the summit of Cerro Chajnantor. IoA and Adachi Ward hope that this helps many people to get interested in astronomy.

In a lecture series "How to enjoy the new planetarium in Galaxy+City" that Adachi Ward held on 11 March, Takashi Miyata, associate professor at IoA, gave a lecture to the public. The title was "A starry sky approaching from an observatory at the highest altitude in the world, and development of a camera delivering live images". Many participants raised their expectations for the new Galaxy+City and provided active comments on how to make use of the facility.
