• Formation and evolution of galaxies based (mainly) on millimeter and sub-millimeter observations.
• Surveys of obscured galaxies.
• Chemical and dynamical properties of the interstellar medium and their relation to the co-growth of galaxies and super-massive black holes.
• Phsical properties of long-duration Gamma-ray burst (L-GRB) host galaxies and surveys of such transient sources in mm/submm wavelengths.
• Dynamical evolution of galaxy clusters via high resolution SZE imaging.

Deep surveys of galaxies using ALMA

A novel ultra-wide-band spectrograph for a new discovery space at mm/submm wavelengths

• The Deep Spectroscopic High-redshift Mapper (DESHIMA)
  • The Deep Spectroscopic High-redshift Mapper (DESHIMA) is a new, wideband spectrometer for the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). By employing a novel integrated superconducting spectrometer design based on the microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) technology, DESHIMA can instantaneously cover a wide instantaneous bandwidth. The primary goal of DESHIMA is to rapidly measure the redshift of dusty star-forming galaxies in the early universe, but it will also be exploited for the studies of e.g., CO spectral line energy distribution (CO-SLED) of bright galaxies and low-spectral resotlution imaging spectroscopic studies of SZE clusters.

Exploring the new frotiers of millimeter/submillimeter-wave astrophysics

• The Large Submillimeter Telescope (LST) + the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST)
  • The 50 m Large Submillimeter Telescope (LST) is optimized for wide-area imaging and spectroscopic surveys in the 70-420 GHz frequency range, which spans the main atmospheric windows at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths for good observation sites such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) site in Chile. We also target observations at higher frequencies of up to 1 THz, using an inner high-precision surface. The LST will facilitate new discovery spaces such as wide-field imaging with both continuum and spectral lines, along with new developments for time-domain science.
  • Key features: ~10^4-6 times faster mapping capability than ALMA at submillimeter-wavelengths
  • It is planned to merge with the Atacama Large Aperture Submm Telescope (AtLAST), an European project with the coherent motivation.
• Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA)
  • Inspired by dramatic discoveries from the Jansky VLA and ALMA, the astronomy community has initiated discussion of a future large area radio array optimized for imaging of thermal emission to milli-arcsecond (mas) scales that will open new discovery space from proto-planetary disks to distant galaxies.
  • Key features: ~10 times better sensitivity than JVLA and ALMA at centimeter to millimeter wavelengths, ~30 times longer baselines that yield milli-arcsec resolution
